Twin brothers at Craiglands Remedial School Teghan and Liaam Shaer (13) are making bath salts and soaps to help raise funds to assist hearing impaired children.

Teghan, who has used hearing aids since he was seven months old, began making the bath salts and soaps to help fund a new cochlear Nucleus 7 implant to help him hear with more clarity, particularly in noisy environments.

Now that the twins have raised enough money to upgrade Teghan’s hearing, they want to help others do the same.

Their mother, Shelene Shaer of Tanaz Hair, said, “We are very excited by the amazing response we have had to this drive. We would like to share this gift with other hearing impaired people… Raising the funds for a cochlear implant is difficult but maintaining that gift can be very challenging and we would like to encourage people to keep donating to help others stay online.”

Donations will be made to Hi-Hopes Early Intervention Programme as well as the charity arm of the Johannesburg Cochlear Implant Centre, to assist other recipients to receive and maintain their cochlear implants.

The twins branded their products T&L to represent their names and hope to open their own company one day and sell the products on a big scale. For now, they are selling their products at Tanaz Hair.

Teghan said, “I also want to raise more money to help other children with hearing problems who don’t have the money to afford the new technology.”

“I want to hear the world. I can’t tell the future but this will help start my future. I’m excited to listen to podcasts and hear my brother when the lights are off.”

“I actually love sound and music. I love the sound of a dog barking.”

Liaam said, “We take so many sounds for granted. We should be happy when we hear a dog barking or a truck going by because some people can’t.”

“Sometimes people think it’s the biggest heart attack having a brother who can’t hear, but that’s not the case. It will be wonderful for him to get an implant and help him to experience life better. I won’t have to shout so much.”

Bath salts and liquid soap cost R100 each while soap bars cost R40 each. Visit Tanaz Hair in Corlett Drive to buy the products, manufactured in recyclable jars.
