BET stars come to South Africa

WESTCLIFF – Four Seasons Hotel hosted two BET actors who came all the way from America to share their experiences of acting in The Bobby Brown Story amidst the singer's seasonal screening focus.

Playing the role of a legendary individual is never easy, but two actors who managed to pull that off in America came all the way to South Africa to share their experiences at the Four Seasons Hotel.

The lead actors in The Bobby Brown Story, a reality screening about the named singer’s life including his relationship with late songstress Whitney Houston, shared what it was like portraying the legendary singers. An audience gathered at the hotel venue in Westcliff, Johannesburg, to experience the screening of the first part of The Bobby Brown Story and also got to interact with the guest stars in their midst.

Woody McClain, who plays Bobby Brown in the four-hour mini-series said singer-songwriter, Bobby Brown was there during the entire making of the movie and did not hold anything back. “Bobby wanted his kids and the world to see his life and he was honest enough to expose all of himself in expressing what he went through. Things he wouldn’t want anyone else to go through but nonetheless, being reality.”

McClain said the other factor that made things easy was working alongside actress Gabrielle Dennis who reprises the role of Whitney Houston. Dennis said it was massive for her to take up the iconic role of Whitney but she approached it with love and respect. “She was a mother and a wife and the series aims at clearing the misconception that Bobby led to Whitney’s downfall because they were really in love.”

Vice president at Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) and Africa’s BET ((Black Entertainment Television), Monde Twala expressed his company as an ‘unapologetic culture brand’ that strives to elevate all that is black and all that is African. “We have a lot of amazing lineups within the local arena. We have our own superstars and celebrities with their own drama so we work towards bringing that home.”

Managing director at Viacom International Media Networks Africa, Alex Okosi said he has been a BET fan since he was as a young person. “It is an incredible honour not just to bring the BET content but also international black culture and make sure we showcase African talent. We have seen Davido and Sjava receiving awards for their acts, we’re proud of them. Africa is definitely making a mark.”
