Cooking competition’s great turn out at George Hay Park

PARKVIEW – George Hay Park was full of life with people of all ages and walks of life attending the potjiekos competition.

The air was filled with delicious aromas as participants cooked up a storm in a potjiekos competition at George Hay Park.

One of the organisers, Bridget von Holdt of Nicarela Charity said the competition was in aid of their organisation.

“There are about 30 different charities that benefit from our charity,” she said.

“There are about 35 different pots today with different ingredients and there is the king of the potjiekos to be announced.” Attendees could buy a plate of pap or rice for R70 then select a potjie side of their choice.

The competing teams were judged by local celebrity judges under the guidance of Steve Maresch of the Local Grill. The winning team of the Decor and Atmosphere award was Roman Empotjie and the winner of the King of Potjie went to 4 Bearded Jacks and a Jill for their kudu pot.

Von Holdt added that the potjie competition and a Christmas Market were the two events that they organised to raise money for various charities. “To date between the two events we have raised probably over R6 million and it’s all with the support of the local communities.”
