Local boy scales to greater choir heights

PARKTOWN – The 15-year-old Parktown North local has achieved concert status making him a fully-fledged member of the Drakensberg Boys' Choir.

As far as South Africa’s boys’ choir scene goes, Matthew Robinson is a name to look out for.

The 15-year-old Parktown North local has achieved concert status making him a fully-fledged member of the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir. He performs in the Wednesday concerts held at the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School in KwaZulu-Natal. An impressive feat that he achieved in his second term at the school in Grade 7.

Now in his third and final year at the school, the young choral maestro has flourished and grown in the most astonishing ways and has toured Japan last year, performing in 14 concerts, and is set to tour Germany, Switzerland and Austria later this year.

Robinson said he had always loved to sing and his father had been very influential and encouraged his love for music.

Belinda Espag, the school’s marketing manager, said the boys worked exceptionally hard incorporating music theory, aural training, choir, and music appreciation into the academic timetable.

“It’s quite tough,” said Matthew. “Every year we do 100 songs a year. We have to memorise the songs.”

Robinson has his sights also set on other musical terrains and has joined the drum squad and regularly goes for bass guitar lessons.
