Jan Celliers learners schooled on new film

Meerkat Maantuig is set to be released nationwide on 16 March and inspired by the youth novella, Blinde Sambok, written by the well-known South African writer, Riana Scheepers.

Actress Anchen du Plessis and director Hanneke Schutte from the film, Meerkat Maantuig, recently paid a visit to Jan Cilliers Laerskool and Pre-Primêr to engage with the children on the new film.

Meerkat Maantuig is set to be released nationwide on 16 March and inspired by the youth novella, Blinde Sambok, written by the well-known South African writer, Riana Scheepers. Schutte said he decided to use the book as a point of departure, which he then transformed into a cinematic story set in the woods of Magoebaskloof near Tzaneen in the Limpopo province.

The film received rave reviews at the Austin Film Festival in Texas, US in November last year. The film has also been officially selected at several other international film festivals, among others, the Oxford Film Festival, Sedona Film Festival in Arizona, and the Bay Area Children’s Festival.

After winning the award for Best Cinematography at the SA Silwerskerm Festival last year, the film premiered in North America last year at the prestigious Austin Film Festival. The film garnered so much attention at the festival that it was given an additional encore Buzz screening.

Children at Jan Celliers receive a talk on the new local film, Meerkat Maantuig.

The cast also includes Pierre van Pletzen, Rika Sennett and Themba Ntuli to name a few.
