Gear up for 11th Parkview Christmas Market at George Hay Park

PARKVIEW – The proceeds from the market will contribute to the Nicarela Charity.

The Parkview Christmas Market will return to George Hay Park for its 11th year this November.

The market, which has grown substantially each year since it started, will be hosted from 24 to 26 November. The proceeds from the market go towards the Nicarela Charity which has been the beneficiary since the market was started.

Nicarela’s purpose is to raise funds to support a number of outreach projects. The charity raises money by organising events and markets with their volunteers.

Last year, the market attracted 10 000 people and managed to raise R750 000 which is donated to various charities including supporting local schools with bursaries.

“At least R25 000 of the money raised goes back into the park, not because of the damage caused only, but we also contribute toward the general upkeep,” said Bridget von Holdt, who manages the PR for the event.

This year the market will have 80 stalls which will feature a variety of homemade crafts. “I do all my Christmas shopping at the market because you can get some good bargains. It’s different, well-priced and you know it’s going towards a good cause.”

The event will also have a variety of entertainment available for both children and adults.

“It’s an ideal place for people to come do their Christmas shopping and it’s a family environment. Depending on the time there’s kiddie’s entertainment and entertainment for young families and then it will go into the more adult evening time entertainment.”

This year entertainment will include performances by singer Josie Field and the Parktown High School for Girls’ marimba band.

Von Holdt added that each year they have no budget for the market and rely on sponsors to help make the event possible.

“We made a R25 000 loss in year one. We overbought food and we did everything wrong but from year two everything changed. Ultimately it would be great to get a sponsor.”
