Jozi Film Festival comes to Rosebank

ROSEBANK – The sixth annual Jozi Film Festival is set for a hostile take-over at the Ster-Kinekor cinema in Rosebank.

The popular Jozi Film Festival will, in its sixth year, open at the Ster-Kinekor Cinema in Rosebank on 21 September with the top 10 films selected from an Africa-wide search.

A talent search competition dubbed Don’t Stop Wondering was run by the Discovery Channel in February and called on African filmmakers to submit short films spanning two to five minutes. The films had to showcase and celebrate unique African stories while capturing the channel’s ethos of sparking curiosity.

Only 10 films made the cut from those that were submitted. The general public was asked to vote for their favourite film.

Lisa Henry, founder and organiser of the festival, said unearthing new talent in the film-making landscape was a rich experience. “We’re so proud to have been a part of this competition. Discovery Channel offered African filmmakers a remarkable opportunity with this competitive category and they have been a wonderful group of people to work alongside on this,” said Henry.

Motheo Matsau, chief of marketing and sales at Ster-Kinekor said, “As an organisation, we take pride in investing in showcasing a fusion of local and international talents on our screens. The film industry has made commendable strides and will continue to do so and we want to be instrumental in achieving more successes.”

The Don’t Stop Wondering competition carries a cash prize of $5 000 (about R 65 000), with the winning filmmaker set to be announced on 24 September. The awards will be held at The Sheds in Johannesburg City Centre.
