Local musician tells all about why she loves Johannesburg

JOBURG – Port Elizabeth-born musician talks about why she loves Jozi.

Now living in Joburg, City Buzz loves what local musician, Moonchild Sanelly is doing for the Jozi music and fashion scene.

She found a space for herself in the music scene just a few years ago, when her 2015 album, Rabulapha, was met with critical acclaim in South Africa and even in the USA – but she’s also a fashion designer, making her way in that industry too.

Her music has been described as electronic, but she describes it as ‘future ghetto funk’.

Sanelly hopes that what she does in her music can affect the lives of those who listen to it.

“Why music? Because I love it and I can do it – it’s just part of being a creative. I want people to feel liberated when they hear the music,” said Sanelly.

Since living in Durban and moving to Johannesburg, she’s had some great performances with Madala Kunene, Busi Mhlongo, Thandiswa Mazwai, Spoek Mathambo, and many more; and collaborations with BLK JKS, Toya Delazy, The 2 Bears, Sketchy Bongo to name a few – and has even made waves with her recent controversial nude Marie Claire photoshoot for charity.

Is it the Joburg air that has pushed her to bare it all?

“I’ve been in Joburg for five-and-half years now and I love it because it keeps me on my toes. Joburg is fast, driven; the melting-pot for the individual who knows what they want. Joburg is the Gautrain of the industry.”

With a Converse collaboration, music on her brain and fashion pulsing through her fingers into her clothes; this dynamite girl is someone to watch.
