Music workshops for aspiring musicians ahead of Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival

JOBURG – The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival in September is not only about music.

Business workshops are giving back to the community in a different way by providing emerging talent with invaluable advice from music experts.

Geleza Kleva and Learn provides free music business workshops, which form part of the Joy of Jazz initiative, in July all around Gauteng. These workshops are especially designed to show how the music industry works and to help would-be artists gain a foothold in the industry.

Under the banner of Youth Development in the Arts, these workshops have been an integral part of the broader Standard Bank Joy of Jazz initiative for the past three years and are highly successful enterprises.

Concord Nkabinde, mentor and well-known South African musician and composer, has been running these initiatives with remarkable success.

The project started in 2014 when organiser, T Musicman, saw a need to educate emerging artists and The Geleza Kleva and Learn workshops were established.

Young musicians will receive advice as well as be exposed to various music disciplines such as songwriting, music composition, arrangement, playing music communally, live performances, marketing their music, organising and managing musical events, and the business of music.

The workshops cover topics such as how the industry works, different music careers, composing and songwriting, performing and the live music scene, and much more.

Author, musician and Wits lecturer Jonathan Shaw who wrote the book, South African Music Business, will be one of the speakers at the workshops and will discuss how the industry works.

For Standard Bank, the educational workshops are a cornerstone of its sponsorship of the broader festival, with them running programmes that focus on building a firm financial structure to business, along with general financial fitness and literacy. “It is important for us to be able to provide a solid base and knowledge for the next generation of music industry businesses,” said Hazel Chimhandamba, head of group sponsorships at Standard Bank.

Standard Bank Joy of Jazz executive producer, Mantwa Chinoamadi concluded, “It is through a deliberate effort to develop our youth that in years to come will reap a bountiful harvest of musical greats. We are delighted to have artistic luminaries, government and institutional support to make this programme a reality.”
