South African Depression and Anxiety Group offers free support groups in Rosebank

JOBURG – The South African Depression and Anxiety Group is offering a free support group. Find out more information here.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) will host a Family Members’ Support Group for family members of those suffering from mental illnesses or substance abuse problems on 28 June at 7 pm at Rosebank Union Church.

The free group offers support to anyone with family members who suffer from a mental illness or substance abuse problem and provides a place of warmth, understanding and support.

Support group leader, Kay Curtis said, “If we have a family member or loved one that we know is struggling, it can often leave us feeling helpless, upset and isolated, so it’s a wonderful thing to realise that we’re not alone, there is support, and there is a place where we can just be in a non-judgmental, understanding environment of a support group.”

Guest speakers and experts in the field of psychology will at times provide talks to group members. Groups will be able to discuss effective ways of managing symptoms, self-help tips and how to help a loved one with mental health or substance abuse problems.

The non-profit organisation strives to educate patients, families, professionals and the general public on the nature and management of mental illnesses and substance abuse. The organisation also aims to eliminate the discrimination and stigma that surrounds mental illness, as well as to increase access to high-quality care for all South Africans.

Sadag support groups are run either by members who have recovered from one of these disorders or by professionals in the community. These groups provide members with the opportunity to form connections with others experiencing similar troubles and to learn from one another in a non-judgmental, confidential atmosphere.
