World HIV Vaccine Awareness Day is observed on 18 May to recognise the many healthcare professionals, scientists and communities around the world who are working to create a safe and effective HIV vaccine.
Knowing your HIV status is incredibly important, especially if you are sexually active or engaging in activities that put you at a higher risk of contracting the virus such as unprotected sex or sharing needles with others.
The most common HIV test detects the antibodies in the immune system used to fight against the virus. However, this test is usually only effective from three months of contracting the virus as this is how long it typically takes the antibodies to develop.
These HIV tests are readily available and results can be determined within about 30 minutes.
Where can you go to get tested?
Your doctor’s office:
A quick and simple HIV test can be taken at your doctor’s office.
A clinic or hospital:
All clinics offer HIV testing including the Zuzimpilo Clinic, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Milpark Hospital and Life Brenthurst Clinic among others.

An at-home HIV test can be purchased from most clinics and is simple and effective to use.
