A concept never before seen in South Africa, Theatre for Babies comes to Wits.
Swedish resident, Dalija Acin Thelander will introduce her choreographic practice for babies and the key aspects of her work which aim at rethinking and challenging concepts of performing arts for babies and young children.
On 13 May, Theatre for Babies will be hosted by Wits University at the Wits Amphitheatre.
The work of award-winning choreographer and theatre practitioner, Thelander, aspires to contribute to the notion of choreography as expanded practice. She has been involved in research and creation in the field of contemporary dance for babies and children since 2008, as well as teaching, lecturing and asserting the importance of early encounters with art.
Her performances for the youngest audiences have successfully toured in Japan, Korea, China, Brazil and Europe. Her choreographed installation for babies, titled Baby Space, was showcased in Serbia, Poland, Denmark, Japan, China and soon in South Africa, Singapore and Greenland.
She presented her works internationally on numerous festivals such as Fratz, Swop, Impulstanz, Tanz in August, Les Particules and Perforations. In 2008, Thelander received Prix Jardin d’Europe for the performance Handle With Great Care at the Impulstanz Festival in Vienna.
She is the initiator and co-ordinator of The Generator, a collaborative platform for the development of dance theatre for children in the Balkan region; the co-founder and co-ordinator of Station Service for Contemporary Dance in Belgrade; co-founder of Nomad Dance Academy; and is also a co-founder and co-curator of Kondenz Festival for Performing Arts in Belgrade, Serbia.
