A melting-pot of culture, Newtown presents a proudly Indian experience at Sundaes on Junction.

Afro-Indian dance and music come to the inner city on 26 March, when Newtown Junction will be graced by a world-class performance of traditional Indian dance, masterfully choreographed by Tribhangi Dance Theatre.

The Tribhangi Dance Theatre, a professional, multi-cultural dance company, was established by Jayesperi Moopen in 1989.

Tribhangi is the name for a stance used in Indian classic dance and features in sculpture and the arts. The company, named after this stance, finds its uniqueness in its bold objective to constantly take risks when creating meaningful and significant dance work in an ever-changing environment.

The company’s repertoire includes African, Indian, Contemporary and Afro-fusion as a reflection of the sensitivity, respect, understanding and knowledge of the cultures it engages with through dance. This is an important facet of their work which has allowed them to tour extensively locally and internationally, performing in Mauritius, Lesotho, Botswana, Lesotho, Botswana, Egypt, Germany, India, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom, Malaysia and Canada and many parts of South Africa.

The dance company believes that the performance arts transcend culture and it is this point of view that is key in creating an intercultural dialogue with a specific emphasis on urban spaces where the density and diversity of cultures are immense.

This show comes amidst a number of important ones including a performance, in February, for the High Commission of India.
