SA Music Award nominee to perform in Joburg

SOPHIATOWN – Lwanda Gogwana will be performing in Johannesburg for the first time at The Mix in Sophiatown, this March.

 

Three-time South African Music Award nominee, Lwanda Gogwana will perform for the first time in Johannesburg on 24 March at 8pm at The Mix in Sophiatown.

His show, Songbook Chapter 1.5, signifies the journey from Chapter 1 to Chapter 2. The jazz trumpeter and composer was born in the Eastern Cape and bases his composing style on his Xhosa cultural roots.

Gogwana graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree majoring in composition and arrangement from the University of Cape Town under Prof. Peter Klatzow and Prof. Mike Campbell. He also received a scholarship to study in Norway, at the Norges Musikkhogskole based at the University of Oslo. He has completed an honour’s degree in African Musicology under the mentorship of Dr Sylvia Bruinders.

Gogwana has participated in community building projects, including teaching and conducting workshops in and around the country. He was also part of a youth run organisation, Rythm (ReachingYouth Through Music) that aimed at promoting South African music to the youth.

He has constantly conducted workshops for the South African Association for Jazz Education conference and for the City of Cape Town Arts and Culture Department youth development projects.

Gogwana has previously worked with many musicians such as the Tete Mbambisa band, Bokani Dyer, Kyle Shepherd and Lulama Gaulana and many others. He is currently a trumpet player for the Jimmy Dludlu band.
