Afrikaans music travels in March

JOBURG – A local family duo take Afrikaans music to international heights.

South African family duo Annari Breed and DuPreez Strauss will take on towns and cities across the Flemish and Dutch nations, in a series of performances to re-ignite the historic passion for Afrikaans music abroad.

The Flemish-South African Cultural Foundation together with the Marnixring association for the promotion of Dutch language and culture, announced a European tour of Afrikaans music to celebrate the growing support for South African arts and culture in Belgium and the Netherlands.

In an effort to generate cross-cultural exchange, acclaimed musicians Breed and Strauss, use music as a universal tool for dialogue and cooperation. The choral cousins are set to take audiences on an emotional journey of Afrikaans music through their distinct sound of melodic nostalgia and newly composed songs.

The tour will offer audiences a chance to connect with the Afrikaans language, drawing the distance closer between communities and reinforcing traditionally strong cultural ties.

Chairman of the foundation Frank Judo said, “For the Dutch-speaking public, the experience of listening to Afrikaans creates a unique combination of cross-cultural connection and familiarity. When Afrikaans music is performed, that experience is simply magical. We believe in the power of cultural exchange to develop relationships and strengthen ties, and so we create platforms for Afrikaans and Dutch speakers to interact and communicate. Every engagement creates new plans, new experiences and new encounters, like a strong friendship.”

Embarking on their first European tour, Breed and Strauss offer audiences a new and enriching way to understand the Afrikaans language. With music as an access point for education, the campaign includes workshops for youth.

Breed said, “We look forward to sparking a fresh interest in Flemish-speaking youth for Afrikaans music and to facilitate the creation of new environments for young and old to engage with South Africa’s rich cultural heritage. Music is a true means to connect communities and we hope this tour not only inspires Europeans to look beyond but also to build a passion for South Africa’s abundant diversity.”

The duo takes off for their European tour on 1 March, following an exciting performance at Foxwood House in Killarney on 28 February.
