Vuyani Dance Company’s own at Dance Umbrella

JOBURG – One of Vuyani Dance Company's own makes her way to Dance Umbrella and the company joins in on the journey.

One of South Africa’s most sought after contemporary dance companies will show its effects at Dance Umbrella 2017.

Vuyani Dance Theatre, based in Newtown, will be showing its talent as part of Lulu Mlangeni’s work called, Page 27 at Dance Umbrella.

“Being part of the Vuyani Dance Theatre has been a real dream come true for me as it is a black-owned company and one of the best in South Africa. I have grown and learnt a lot from this company artistically and business-wise,” said Mlangeni.

Speaking about the work she’ll present at the prestigious dance festival, Mlangeni said, “Page 27 consists of a solo piece performed by me. Page 27 was conceived through the Sophie Mgcina Emerging Voice Award that was presented at the Naledi Theatre Awards by the Market Theatre.

“It is inspired by the social issues we encounter in our everyday lives; it speaks directly to societies and interrogates our actions regarding inequalities and gender equities.”

Maintaining a strong family bond with her Vuyani family, Mlangeni credits the result of her final work to the members of the company and appreciates all the help they gave her.

“I believe no man is an island. It took a lot of determination, planning and sleepless nights, but with a very strong team of artists, made it all possible.”

Her hope for presenting Page 27 to the public is that it will bring a change and sense of togetherness and understanding of the country’s history and to also be given more opportunity to stage this work in other festivals.

Catch this work at Dance Umbrella on 28 February and 1 March at the Wits Theatre.
