RKO release new album, Mamba

JOBURG – Radio Kalahari Orkes has a new offering, five years since their last.

It’s five years later and one of South Africa’s most interesting bands is back with a new album.

Radio Kalahari Orkes started in 2004 and has been ‘skoffeling tjunes ever since’, as the band’s drummer, Bradley Cooper explained.

The 13-year-old group is made up of Ian Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Friso Woudstra, Wynand Davel, Barry Steenkamp and Alicia van Dyk who all bring a number of instruments together including guitars, violins and accordions to create their musical sound.

Mamba is the band’s 6th album, which has taken many years to make since the release of the band’s last album five years ago. “The Mamba album is an eclectic mix of songs. From simple, comedic shuffles to big, epic soundscapes. We wanted to be a bit more broad in our sound, so there’s Afrikaans, African beats, Kwaito, ballads and all sorts,” Cooper explained.

“We are convinced our fans will love the new album.”

Although they’re excited about the new music, they have never forgotten the places they’ve played at and the responses they’ve had from fans all over the world. Cooper told City Buzz about one of the best experiences the band has had. “One of the nicest [experiences] was playing acoustically for a small group of fans in a South African restaurant in Amsterdam. People were crying.

“Foxwood Theatre is always [a] nice [place to perform in Johannesburg]. Good sound and they take care of you.”Excited about the release of the new album, Mamba, Cooper emphasised, “The band is tighter than ever and ready to blow you away with our new [songs] on Mamba.”
