The DaniMali Quintent will perform live jazz at Sophiatown The Mix at 8pm on 24 February.

Nhlanhla Daniel Mahlangu, better known as Dani, is the composer and saxophonist behind the DaniMali Quintent.

Read Trapped by his new age music

Mahlangu was born in 1989 in Mamlodi and first encountered jazz through the works of Nat King Cole, the legendary American jazz singer and pianist.

By the age of 16, Mahlangu picked up a saxophone and loved to imitate the sounds of Charlie Parker and Manenberg Coetzee. One of the earliest groups Mahlangu played with was led by Yonela Mnana, with whom he played tenor sax. Later Mahlangu began working with Nduduzo Makhathini’s band, where the young musician began to fully explore his experimental side of music and recorded as a sideman.

The DaniMali Quintet will also perform at Sophiatown The Mix on 71–73 Toby Street, Sophiatown. Doors open at 7pm and entrance is R120 per person.
