PARKVIEW – Enjoy an evening of musical bliss...

Han Jonkers and The Casal Quartet will perform at the St Francis Anglican Church in Parkview on 31 January at 7.30pm and the performance promises to be a night of pure musical bliss.

The Casal Quartet is a classical string quartet from Switzerland and was founded in 1996 by students of the Carmina and Alban Berg Quartet. It introduces classical music from the 17th century to present day audiences. It has earned particular attention with regard to the rediscovery and performance of composers such as Heinrich Kaminski, Viktor Ullmann, Pavel Haas, Erwin Schulhoff, Gideon Klein and other composers who lost their lives during the period of national socialism or were forbidden to work during this time.

Music from Astor Piazzolla and Antônio Carlos Jobim will also be part of the magical night.

Since 2008, the Casal Quartet has been playing regularly on historical 17th century instruments by Jakob Stainer.

Their Dutch guitarist, Jonkers studied guitar with Hans-Lutz Niessen at the Maastricht College of Music. After earning a music education degree and a soloist’s diploma, a scholarship made it possible for him to study for several years with Oscar Ghiglia at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy, where he was awarded the Diploma di Merito.

Further studies followed at the Basel Academy of Music with Konrad Ragossnig and Oscar Ghiglia, where he also graduated with a soloist’s diploma.

Jonkers was the prize-winner at several international competitions. He was awarded in 1983 in Viña del Mar, Chile and in 1985 at the competition Maria Canals in Barcelona, Spain.
