New in town

JOBURG – Ezzey breaks into the local music industry.

A new musician on the scene is using a global icon as his musical inspiration as he takes on the local music industry.

Ezzey is the Swaziland-born musician who packed up and moved to Johannesburg in order to pursue his dreams of making it as a professional musician.

Born Mlandvo Landy, Ezzey discovered his love for music when he entered a singing competition at the age of 14 and won first prize in his home country. At the time, still enrolled in secondary education, he was focused on his schoolwork, but couldn’t shake the feeling of wanting to dance, act and sing on a platform that would allow the world to see his passion.

In 2014, 12 years later, he was discovered by influential kwaito star, Mshoza who saw promise in the talent of the young, aspiring entertainer and signed him to her record label, Fresh Money Family Records, as Ezzey.

“It’s actually taken from Yeezy – Kanye West, Kanyeezy – because I’ve always been ambitious and he is my inspiration,” he explained.

Now, being a South African resident for just one month, he has released his first single and is looking to see the response from the hip-hop-loving public of South Africa.

The track titled Nobuhle is a song about a boy in love who expresses his emotions; the content of which is lesser explored in hip-hop. “We all know that being emotional as a rapper, and as men in general, is frowned upon in society,” he said.

He told City Buzz that his album is set to be released next year and it is not the typical music you would hear from other hip-hop artists.

“Only one song is about ‘turn up’ and the rest of them have real messages. There is hope through my music. There are a lot of people going through a lot of things and they have nothing to hang onto, but my music gives hope and gets them going.”
