Night market and First Thursdays

JOBURG – First Thursdays Johannesburg offers a ton of fun and more.

Entertainment, performance art, theatre and world music come together this week!

First Thursdays in Johannesburg, offer the city’s people a free cultural experience where art galleries and other cultural attractions in Braamfontein and Rosebank stay open late on the first Thursday of every month.

After re-opening in September, this month Neighbourgoods Night Market brings lovers of arts and culture a one-night journey into performance art, theatre and world music.

The event, which takes place on 6 October, will feature a performance piece called Oxygen by Emma Tollman and Francesca Mattys, accompanied by musical interludes from some of Joburg’s most renowned selectors – DJ Charles Leonard and Polyestervelcro playing a variety of jazz, Afrobeat and lounge rhythms that please the crowds every time.

Oxygen is choreographed by it performers, Tollman and Mattys and it breathes life into a story about two women’s struggle to survive life in one piece while enduring a culture of fragmenting objectification.

The piece will be performed in two parts. The first segment, called, In Between Breaths, observes the ‘wooden experience’ of girls growing up in a convent of religious and gendered conservatism. Hard wooden school chairs hold the memory of harder wooden punishment in a social upbringing that abuses girls to keep them in line. The struggle to explore in these contrived spaces renders the female body a tortured object. The breaths in between this indoctrination simmer inside the mind of a girl questioning the God of the world she’s been raised in.

Still Breathing, the second half of the performance, is set for 10.30pm and it explores the imagery and symbolism of ‘baby dolls’, one of society’s popular products disfigured through sexualisation and the male gaze. Baby Doll walks among the ghosts of her memory, where she looks for her lost childhood.

The market is open to people of all ages from 7pm until midnight and it’s one not to be missed, at this First Thursdays.
