Timo ODV goes back to his Origins

JOBURG – One of the country's favourite producers is talking about his Origins.

A new EP, a short album titled Origins, is set to take pop music lovers on a journey into underground dance music.

Timothy Oude Vrielink, better known to his fans as Timo ODV, is the hit-maker who brought us smash hits such as Save me, I need you and Find my way; and now he’s taking all his loyal followers back to his origins.

Origins is the title of Timo’s first album – of sorts – an EP, which is now available for purchase, but this short album is not what you would normally expect from the local producer and musician. “I didn’t set out to make pop music. When I started making music it was deep underground dance music, so Origins is just me taking it back to producing and doing club music,” Oude Vrielink explained.

He admits that his musical intentions have always been to produce underground dance music, with a ‘ratchet baseline’, but once Save me was released, he was labelled a singer and felt that releasing the EP was the right way to let the public know what he is really all about – a venture now yielding positive responses on iTunes.

“It was quite nerve-racking because I was scared that people would just want me to sing, but it was number one on iTunes for six days [after its release] and they think it’s rad.”

This being a satisfying reaction for the industry newcomer who prefers not to work with other artists. “I figured that if I couldn’t make three or four big songs all on my own then I wouldn’t consider myself an artist.”

Now that the EP is out – on which he did, in fact, feature fellow musician, Ryki – the artist is now considering collaborations with other industry heavyweights such as Black Coffee, but would still like to remain hands-on in the music making process.

According to Oude Vrielink, it is the vibe and feel of the beat that makes him love certain songs and he hopes that his fans will be able to identify with the feeling of his new songs as much as they did with his previous singles.

While Timo ODV is not one for being ‘spotted’, you can find him playing music at clubs including Randlords in Braamfontein.

The EP Is available for download on iTunes.
