Taking on the industry alone

JOBURG – Christian Heath is leaving his band and navigating the music industry solo.

He’s taking a step back from Christian Heath Band and becoming Christian Heath: the solo artist.

Heath is no stranger to the South African music scene, although many are still wondering where he’s been hiding the past few years. He’s returned and embarking on a solo career, gigging regularly in Joburg north at venues including Montecasino.

Using his standard rock base, Heath has introduced a more modern pop sound to his solo music, paying more attention to the vocal and lyrical content and allowing audiences to better connect with his songs.

On his latest offering, he has enlisted the help of indie-folk artist and producer Howie Combrink. “Howie is very relaxed and a great muso and producer. The dude has some serious skills in the studio and gets into a song pretty quickly, which is great in my opinion.

“I’m lucky that every producer I have had the privilege of working with has liked what I have had to offer and working with them has been a great learning experience.”

Reminiscent of his early influences – Def Leppard, Journey, 30 Seconds to Mars, Richard Marx and Michael Bolton – Heath’s first single as a solo artist, I’m Yours, follows this formula and pulls at the heartstrings.

It is a song about long distance relationships and speaks about two lovers’ determination to stay true to each other.

It was written by Heath when he moved to Johannesburg and left his hometown of Port Elizabeth behind, taking with him only his guitar.

“I’m Yours is catchy and has a feel good vibe to it. It starts off slow but builds to a power chorus,” he concluded.

Inspired by experiences, love, trust and life, it’s not hard to find meaning in his songs and he aims to reach as many people as possible through his music – maybe see the world and perform at Wembley Stadium, too.
