Gautrain strike looms

SANDTON – Gautrain strike looms as workers are involved in an increase dispute.

According to news reports, Gautrain bus drivers and train operators are threatening to go on strike if employer, Bombela Concessions, does not concede to their demand of a nine percent salary hike. Bombela Concessions are currently offering a 7.6 percent increase.

The United National Transport Union (Untu) is awaiting approval for strike action from the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). If the CCMA grants the union a non-resolution certificate, workers will be permitted to go on strike and will be required to give the employer 48-hours notice .

Untu spokesperson, Steve Harris said, “The strike will depend on their constituency. Once the certificate is issued, we’ll then ask our members for a mandate whether they’re willing to go on strike and if they then say yes, we’ll give the company notice within the terms of labour law.”

Bombela Concessions’ spokesperson, Kesagee Nayager said Bombela Concessions would withhold comment until a decision had been made by the CCMA, which is expected to be reached on 17 August.
