Celebrating excellence in business

ROSEBANK – A glitz and glam event in celebration of women leaders.

Tsogo Sun celebrated women in business and leadership in a pink studded event at 54 on Bath in Rosebank.

Corporate affairs general manager at Tsogo Sun, Candy Tothill, said women played a significant role in the success of her organisation with 50 percent of the workforce comprising women. She said the company was predominantly run by women and 43 percent of general management were females.

“Today is really to celebrate women’s achievements and all the things that they have accomplished, sometimes against very difficult odds,” said Tothill. “It’s not easy running a family, a career and trying to find that balance. So today we want to recognise how much women contribute to society as a whole.”

The glamorous event was also an opportunity for the gaming and entertainment group to announce their citizenship portfolio which supports entrepreneurs.

“Today we have a lot of our key entrepreneurs that we support in our programme who are running small businesses,” said Tothill. “We put them through a 12-month development programme to help professionalise their businesses and to make them more sustainable.”

Nomsa Mazibuko, the reigning Tsogo Sun Entrepreneur of the Year who will also be on the judging panel for the 2016 challenge is a beneficiary of the programme. She said she was empowered and her business in Witbank, eMalahleni, has grown in leaps and bounds.

“I now run my business like a small hotel and the level of professionalism is much better,” said Mazibuko

Guest speaker Phuti Mahanyele, executive chairperson at Sigma Capital, raised concerns about the lack of incorporation of women in major companies.

“We have 2.4 percent of women who are CEOs in South Africa. Just over nine percent are chairman of organisations and that means we [women] are not present,” said Mahanyele. “We are present on boards of companies but on the executive structures we are not.”

Mahanyele who has won numerous awards including Forbes Woman Africa Business Woman of the Year said the executive structures were what women should be aiming for because they were the engines of businesses.

“The people who run the business are the executives and we are not on those teams and it’s a continuing concern.”

Mahanyele encouraged all present to work towards fulfilling their dreams and becoming the best by reaching their full potential.

“As children, we can be so talkative, have so many things that we think about and want to do because there are no constrictions,” said Mahanyele. “But over the years we suddenly learn things that teach us and put us into a box of how we ought to be.”
