UJW puts smiles on children’s faces with new dental packs

HOUGHTON – UJW puts smiles on children's faces in honour of Mandela Day.

Children of the Happy Kids crèche had a reason to smile after recently receiving a special visit and gifts from the Union of Jewish Women (UJW).

The creche in Germiston received donated dental care packs, comprising a toothbrush and toothpaste, from the organisation as part of the union’s Mandela Day commemorative events.

Cindy Kree, executive director of UJW, explained that taking on this project was about promoting the importance of oral hygiene among young children. “So many children have never had their own toothbrush and we wanted to gift them with that and teach them the importance of taking care of their teeth,” Kree explained.

“Doing this was part of the organisation’s vision to empower and support others, and being able to contribute towards that, means a lot to us.”

Kree also expressed gratitude to the volunteers who assisted with the distribution and thanked them for their efforts.

Adding to this was a delighted Kate Makola, owner of Happy Kids, who expressed her heartfelt gratitude at the generous donation. “It’s so overwhelming to get this donation and the recognition because we also believe in promoting dental health among our children.”

Makola also expressed hope that the partnership would continue and that more donors would come on board and support the crèche. “This could be in the form of funds which would go a long way in taking care of the children and helping the centre increase its staff.”

The visit forms part of UJW’s project aimed at promoting dental health among schoolchildren. Other branches which participated in the Mandela Day project included the Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London.
