Get happy with drums

JOBURG - Maboneng will celebrate International Day of Happiness with an Instameet!

The City is alive with activity and, as of late, there have been more Instameets and tours of the City taking place than usual.

Maboneng will form part of the craze on 20 March, International Day of Happiness, when Afrika Tikkun takes over the precinct and brings it alive with the sound of music and drums.

Afrika Tikkun, the company that implements development programmes to redress the inequities of apartheid and to help disadvantaged young people, are encouraging the public to Toyi-Toyi for Joy, the official title of the event.

Ten drummers from Uthando Centre in Braamfontein will be attending the event with 20 drums and the public is invited to drum and dance with them in the drumming circle.

“It’s so much more than an Insta-event,” said Catherine van Schoor, public relations officer at Afrika Tikkun.

“We want to amplify the sound of what we’re doing and that’s why we’re doing drums. They’re African, they’re celebratory and they are very joyous.”

The company also feels that there are so many reasons for South Africans to celebrate and be happy, one of which is because the country’s Constitution is in robust shape, and is one of the best in the world.

In a statement released by the company, they maintain, “People are better off than they were 20 years ago. Our economy has grown and there are enough committed South Africans who are willing to work hard to ensure it continues that way.”

Whatever your reason to be happy, 20 March is the day to get together outside Market on Main and celebrate it with other happy people.

Everyone is invited to bring placards and toyi-toyi or march in celebration.
