MUST READ: Bodies on display in unique exhibition (VIDEO)

NEWTOWN – The new Body Worlds Vital exhibition will have your skin crawling and your senses intrigued when it opens at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown from 1 March until 19 June.

The incredibly unique exhibition will celebrate the wonder, resilience and fragility of the human body, but be warned, it is not for the faint of heart.

The specimens on display have been permanently preserved through the process of plastination, a process that was invented by anatomist, Dr Gunther von Hagens.

Plastination is a process used to preserve bodies or body parts by replacing the water and fat content of the body with certain plastics so that the parts can be touched or displayed without causing a smell or showing signs of decay.

You’ll get a first-hand, detailed look at the human body in its prime while exploring human anatomy, physiology and health through about 180 authentic whole-body plastinates, individual organs and transparent body slices.

WATCH:

The bodies on display have all been willed by donors for plastination to increase public awareness of the human body. Guests will be able to see a pair of figure skaters performing a skilful lift, a soccer player dribbling a ball and a chess player plotting his next move, all of which show what muscles are used and how.

This exhibition comes after the incredible success of the Body Worlds exhibition hosted by the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in 2013. Tyrone Thöle, managing director of Great World Exhibitions said, “For me, this entirely new exhibition is an authentic and unforgettable experience and I am convinced that it provides the most meaningful and memorable learning opportunity for everybody.”

Dr Angelina Whalley, curator and designer of the Body Worlds exhibitions explained,”Body Worlds Vital celebrates the living human body in its optimal state – healthy, vibrant, vigorous and in motion. At the same time, it presents the leading health concerns of contemporary times, the causes of these conditions and diseases, and ways to prevent or manage them.”

Ticket prices range from R100 to R160. To avoid possible disappointment pre-online bookings are recommended.
