Awards launched to honour kwaito and house

JOBURG – Aimed at recognising two of South Africa’s most popular music genres, the inaugural Mzansi Kwaito House Music Awards media launch took place at the Maslow Hotel in Sandton recently.

The awards, which take place on 7 November at Sun City Superbowl, will be hosted by the Mzansi Kwaito House Music Awards company and will see kwaito and house artists honoured in 36 categories.

Speaking at the media launch, renowned kwaito artist, Eugene Mthethwa, highlighted the need to host award ceremonies of this nature in the country.

“These awards play a big role in documenting kwaito, a proudly South African brand that remains a voice for township people,” he said.

“It’s also important to tell the story of the genre and its history because, unfortunately, the country has never seemed to embrace kwaito as its own.”

Mthethwa also thanked the organisers of the awards and urging them to continue telling the story of kwaito.

Perfecta Khumalo, chief executive officer of the Mzansi Kwaito House Music Awards company, also gave a brief address at the launch, saying that the awards were an opportunity to show the public that kwaito remained relevant.

“Whoever said kwaito is dead, we are here to show them that it’s not true, the genre is alive and thriving,” she said.

She concluded by adding that the company was proud to bring house and kwaito together, and also looked back and honoured past artists in the kwaito genre.

The Mzansi Kwaito House Music Awards company was founded in 2014.
