Potjie cook-off for charity

JOHANNESBURG – If you’re potty about potjie, you’ll want to bring these skills down to the annual Potjie of Hope Cook-off with Celebrity Masterchef SA winner, Chris Forrest.

The cook-off is to raise funds for and awareness of The Villa of Hope, a home that cares for orphaned and abandoned children.

“By the end of December this year, they’ll have a quota of 90 children,” avid supporter and local comedian Forrest said.

The problem, he added, is that the home only receives government funding for 45 children, which doesn’t fully cover the cost of keeping these children, hence the cook-off.

At this point, there are about 20 potjies that will be simmering away on the day, but there’s plenty of room for those who are keen to enter. There will be a ton to do for the family, with tasty potjies to try, a flea market to wander through and even live entertainment. There will also be a funky kiddies corner, loads of competitions to enter and even an auction.

Celebrity Masterchef SA fans who are hoping to get a taste of Forrest’s talents will, unfortunately, be disappointed, as he won’t be competing in the cook- off.

“If I were to do one, I’d probably do my signature chicken-biltong potjie,” he said.

He is, however, a judge. “I think the most important thing for me is obviously the taste, followed by originality, use of ingredients, texture and bribes. Just kidding on the bribes,” he said.

Interested in being a part of the annual Potjie of Hope Cook-off? It’s only R200 for a family cook-off and R500 for a corporate cook-off. If you’re interested in having a stall at the flea market, it’ll cost you R150 for the day.

The Potjie of Hope Cook-off is happening on 30 May at 28 Cavendish Road, Nancefield, Soweto, from 10am to 4pm.

Entrance for the day without cooking is R10 and children enter for free.
