Newtown shows its offerings

NEWTOWN – Newtown, one of Joburg's many urban rejuvenation projects, showcased what it had to offer over the weekend.

Newtown, as with many of the other inner-Joburg areas, is culturally diverse and offers lovers of arts and culture a plethora of activities and shows to indulge their deepest cultural desires.

The weekend was dedicated entirely to showcasing the stunning urban venues in Newtown, as well as the artists and producers of the finest artworks and music from all over the great City.

The Department of Arts and Culture and Artist Proof Studio proudly presented Open Newtown.

The main aim of the weekend was not only to entertain, but also educate, inform and most importantly allow for collaboration between groups.

The activities of the weekend began on Saturday at various venues around Newtown, including Newtown Junction Mall, Bassline, Bus Factory and various museums, coffee shops and lounges.

Included in the performances of the weekend was a theatrical show called Bottom’s Dream at the Market Theatre Lab, which told a magical and chaotic tale of the rookie actors of A Midsummer Nights Dream as it wound down to the opening performance of the show.

Bodies of work that have been confined to the four walls of the exhibition room in which they’re displayed – including works from the Market Photo Workshop, Artist Proof Studio and Assemblage – were showcased all around the town.

Not only was the art on sale, but so were the handmade bag, jewellery and even cutlery collections by the various artisans based in and around Joburg.

The weekend was a cultural explosion of colour, music, arts, crafts and an electric vibe that no doubt left visitors longing for the Newtown feeling once more.
