PARKVIEW - Passenger, otherwise known as Michael David Rosenthal, gave a profound and moving performance during his first visit to Johannesburg on 14 February, Valentine's Day.

The folk musician has a substantial following in South Africa, evidenced by the many hundreds of fans at his debut concert in South Africa. Michael Lowenthal, winner of SA Idols, was the supporting act.

One audience member said he had been looking forward to seeing Passenger since last year. He said he was excited about the new album, Whispers, although he did admit to a preference for Passenger’s earlier work.

Passenger entertained the crowd with fan favorites, Hearts on Fire and Let Her Go. He also proved himself to be an astute social commentary; with material that critiques modern society’s tendency towards digital life. Much like many folkies before him, he entertains with nothing more than a guitar in hand and his voice.

Michael Lowenthal provided an exciting opening for Passenger. The highlight of his set was a riveting cover of the Bruce Springsteen classic, I’m on Fire, originally off Springsteen’s Born in the USA album.
