Nici Brockwell shows her stuff

PARKHURST – The Motmot gallery, situated in Parkhurst, is the home to the grand ceramics exhibition of Nici Brockwell.

Nici put it forward in her artist’s statement, “The fragility of humanity is a theme that runs through my work. This is probably why I am drawn to porcelain.”

Her work is a collection of porcelain pieces that can be bought at the gallery and are painted in a child-like manner with images of people. This is how she displays the theme of humanity and fragility in her work – in not so many words.

“I love the nature of the clay, its symbolism and how it relates to our rainbow nation. Inspiration is all around me. Johannesburg’s people, its vibrancy, diversity and extremes compel me to create. Through whimsical illustration and symbolic narrative, I seek to authentically share my faith, experience and a message of hope, grace and reconciliation,” she continues. “My work is the product of the way I see and experience the world seen and unseen.”

She also collaborated with Nkhensani Nkosi, founder of the Stoned Cherrie fashion label, on a few of the pieces.

Her art also displays vibrant and playful colours. These make these pieces a pleasure to view and an excitement to take home.
