Beer tastes better in a bus

FOURWAYS - What better way to enjoy the best craft beers Joburg has to offer than on the top level of an open-top double decker bus.

Douglasdale resident, Tinashe Mupanomunda (27) turned his love of craft beer into an enterprise with the Take you There Mega Beer tour, a journey from Fourways Mall, to Black Horse Brewery and Restaurant in Magaliesburg, Chameleon Village Brewery in Hartbeespoort and finally to Brewhogs micro-brewery in Kyalami.

He has been running the Mega Beer tour for two years, but this year he decided to re-route and launch another beer tour option, the Jozi Beer Tour. The Jozi Beer Tour starts at Fourways Mall and still includes Brewhogs micro-brewery in Kyalami but then veers to the South to include brand-new micro-brewery Swagga Brewery in Alberton and Soweto Gold brewery in Orlando.

Brewhogs is part-owned by master brewer, Apiwe Nxusani, who shows that beer is not just for men. Swagga Brewery started as the hobby of the owners of a steel factory but is now a fully-fledged brewery with products such as country ale, India pale ale and an apple cider.

Soweto Gold is the brainchild of Ndumiso Madlala, a native of KwaZulu-Natal who worked at SABMiller before breaking away to join the craft beer revolution. Soweto Gold boasts their signature Soweto Gold Superior Lager as well as apple and cherry ales.

Interestingly Soweto Gold will soon be embarking on the process of pasteurising and canning their beers and will be the first craft brewery in South Africa to do so.

The Jozi Beer tour is designed for guests to get the most out of their passion for beer. Copperlake draughts flow on board the bus and at every brewery there is a tour and a tasting.
