Alex boys stars in National Chidren’s Theatre production

JOBURG - Jennifer de Klerk of Artslink described Under the Boabab tree as “a delightful story about the ants’ soccer world cup leads into an energetic “Waka Waka”, the crumpled tin cans adding to the percussion.”

Trent Kgodu Peta from Alexandra stars in the theatre production, Under the Boabab tree, currently running at the National Children’s Theatre in Parktown.

Jennifer de Klerk of Artslink, described it as “a delightful story about how the ants’ soccer world cup leads into an energetic Waka Waka, the crumpled tin cans adding to the percussion.”

It is a charming selection of traditional stories, vibrant songs, pulsating rhythms, and African drums and dance, which returns to National Children’s Theatre for a limited season during school holidays, and Alex theatre-lovers are encouraged to go and be thrilled.

The story begins when their beloved khokho (gogo or insect) dies, and his great grandchildren are surprised to hear that they have inherited a large dusty old suitcase. They call their friends to help open the suitcase.

As they all gather under the baobab tree, they carefully uncover this treasure of mementos: Some old photographs, a tape recorder and other odds and ends, including traditional garments and hats.

Not knowing what this all means, they have great fun making up stories around these “treasures”. They listen to the records, and eventually sing and dance to music from great grandpa’s collection, including Johnny Clegg, Miriam Makeba and Mango Groove.

An energetic and multi-talented cast takes the audience into a suitcase filled with fun and action. Adapted and directed by Francois Theron, this delightful production promises to enthral and entertain young audiences, and teach some valuable lessons about friendship. Most of all it will instil pride in our rich, unique South African culture and heritage, said De Klerk .

It is presented by a talented cast including JT Medupe, Nonhla Mkhonto, Suzaan Helberg, Emkay Khanyile and Mamohato Askew and three casts of nine children from NCT Saturday Theatre Workshops.
