Divine intervention at the lyric

JOHANNESBURG - Religious debates have a tendency of becoming arguments, but putting a six comedians on a stage with religion as a topic could go either way.

Comedy Central presented comedy show, Divine at the Lyric on 12 and 13 September. Previous Comedy Central shows nailed the subject of sex, and dissected the topic of race.

Part three of the new series didn’t disappoint either as it turned its ever-curious gaze on the unholy topic of religion.

Hosted by Mr Unradio himself, Gareth Cliff, together with comedy legend, Casper De Vries, Deep Fried Man, US comedian Griff, newcomer Yaaseen Barnes and Kagiso KG, one could have easily predicted that the show could’ve offended some viewers as it was comedy with no holds barred.

Divine explored the beliefs and feelings of some of South Africa’s major religions and offered a unique perspective of what the comedians believed was the ‘traditional’ religion of South Africa.

Laughter was the tone of the night and appears to have been a successful comedy evening with everyone glued to their seats until the last joke.
