An enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship that unfolds on a Greek island, the musical features 22 of the Swedish supergroup’s greatest hits, including Dancing Queen, Take a Chance on Me, and The Winner Takes it All.
Mamma Mia! will delight local audiences at Montecasino’s Teatro in March and April.
“On the even of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago,” said Big Concerts CEO Attie van Wyk.
This is the first time in 10 years that the international tour production of Mamma Mia! will perform in Johannesburg.
The English-language international tour premiered in Dublin in September 2004, and has visited 77 cities in 36 countries.
Over 4.5 million people have seen the musical.
“[The musical] continues to be a huge success around the world, and we are thrilled that the international tour is finally coming back to Johannesburg,” he said.
The show will celebrate 15 years in London’s West End theatre district, and is the ninth longest-running show on Broadway in New York City.
The film, starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, is the highest-grossing live action musical film of all time.
“Mamma Mia! is the ultimate feel-good show, and we are excited to work with Big Concerts on this production,” said Teatro manager Bryan Hill.
