Search on for local band to open for MGMT

JOBURG - The search is on for the local band that will fill a coveted slot at this year's Vodacom In the City festival.

The lucky band will be the only South African musicians in a line-up that includes some of the hottest names in indie music.

“Building on the enormous success of last year’s Open the City competition, Vodacom is once again offering SA’s rock and indie bands the opportunity to win the coveted slot at [this year’s festival],” said publicist Darryn Lee.

“With an expected audience of 15 000 screaming fans, the winning band will share the spotlight alongside Rudimental, MGMT, Crystal Fighters and The Presets.”

Lee added that last year’s winning band, Cape Town-based Al Bairre, had been further propelled into the local music scene through their performance at the event.

Bands that would like to enter the competition need to do so via the festival website.

“There’s a simple form that needs to be filled in, along with links to music, [and] a band logo and photo must also be uploaded,” said Lee.

“All entries will be whittled down to the top four finalists by a panel of industry specialists. The fans will then get to vote for their favourite local act.”

All four finalists will perform at the festival pre-party on 5 September at Newtown’s Town Hall to garner votes.

Apart from “opening the city” for the likes of MGMT and Rudimental on the main stage, the winning band will also receive R30 000.

Hopeful bands need to fit the following criteria:

The band must have a minimum of two years’ live performance experience.

The band must have played to an audience of at least 2 000 attendees.

The band must have a minimum of 45 minutes of original material.

The band must have been playlisted on a commercial or campus radio station.

The band must be available to perform on 5 September and 3 October.

Entries close at midnight on 13 August, and the four finalists will be announced on 18 August.

Vodacom in the City will take place on 3 October at Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown.
