The Lumineers to bring raw folk-rock to SA

US FOLK-ROCKERS The Lumineers will bring their brand of alternative music to South Africa for the first time later this year.

Known for their smash hit single Ho Hey, the band’s Emmarentia Dam concert is set to be one of summer’s music highlights.

Local publicist Natasha Goosen said that the band shot to international prominence with their 2011 self-titled debut album.

“The album gave the band international recognition, selling over 3 million copies and over 5.5 million single downloads of their debut single – and arguably [their] most famous song to date – Ho Hey,” she said.

The single’s music video has been viewed more than 109 million times on YouTube.

“The band was nominated for best new artist and best Americana album at the 2013 Grammy Awards, and have played to sold-out shows all over the world [and took] to the stage at major festivals like Glastonbury, Reading, Leeds, Lollapalooza, [and] Big Day Out,” said Goosen.

“Their music has been described as classic and genuine, raw and unique. They mix flavours of folk, alternative rock, Americana and indie, cutting them with a rustic charm.”

The band will be brought to South Africa by Virgin Mobile and Seed Experiences.

Goosen said the supporting line-up will be announced soon.

The Lumineers will perform on 6 December at Emmarentia Dam, Olifants Road, Emmarentia, from 12pm.
