Russian ballet company brings Bolshoi legacy to SA

An enchanting programme of classical highlights by a Russian ballet company will soar across South African stages next month.

The programme, Pearls of the Russian Choreography, is steeped in the finest ballet traditions, and was compiled by former artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet, Yury Vetrov.

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Brenda Sakellarides said that the programme, to be presented by The Stars of the Ballet Russia, will feature acts two and four of Swan Lake in the first half of the show, and the romantic pas de deux from Sleeping Beauty and the Grand Pas Classique from Paquita in the second half.

“Danced to the sublime music of [Pyotr] Tchaikovsky and the legendary ballet composer [Ludwig] Minkus, the creative direction of Pearls of the Russian Choreography is in the hands of Vetrov and Maria Bylova, who were celebrated ballet stars of the Bolshoi Theatre during the tenure of renowned choreographer and Bolshoi artistic director, Yury Grigorovich,” she said.

“From 1990 until 1994, Vetrov himself served as a director of the Bolshoi Ballet.”

Bylova’s grace and elegance captivated audiences during her celebrated international career as the Bolshoi Ballet’s prima ballerina.

She is the ballet mistress to the Stars of the Ballet Russia, and has instilled her exacting standards in this carefully selected touring company.

“Beautiful and talented, the featured soloists are Maria Sokolnikova and Maria Klueva from the Russian National Ballet,” said Sakellarides.

“The impressive German Zhukovsckiy, 2012 soloist of the Bolshoi Ballet Theatre and a recent member of the Kremlin Ballet, will partner them.”

They will be joined by Kremlin Ballet award-winning lead dancer, Mikhailov Mikhail.

“All three featured ballets are major cornerstones of the traditional classical ballet repertory and [are] perennial favourites that have been widely staged over 150 years by ballet companies all over the world,” she said.

“This richly textured programme of fantasy and fairy stories of gypsies, swans and sorcerers will delight old and new audiences.”

The South African run will open on 2 August at the Theatre of Marcellus, Emperors Palace, Kempton Park, Johannesburg, and will be followed by performances in Bloemfontein, Durban and Pretoria.
