Lots of laughs with German comedy

PARKWOOD - An award-winning comedy by Turkish-German director Fatih Akin will be screened at the Goethe-Institut this month.

Soul Kitchen, starring Adam Bousdoukos and Birol Ãœnel, won the special jury prize at the 66th Venice Film Festival in 2009.

“This comedy tells the story of Zinos Kazantsakis, who runs a cheap restaurant called Soul Kitchen in a run-down warehouse district [in Hamburg],” said institute spokesperson Miriam Daepp.

“While the food isn’t very good, a regular clientele shows up each evening for cheap beer and filling food. Bad luck follows Kazantsakis like a shadow, and when his girlfriend Nadine runs off to China, he decides to follow her, putting his brother in charge of the restaurant.”

However, his brother is a convicted criminal, and before long, the city’s underworld takes over the diner and tax collectors threaten to shut it down.

It is only when Kazantsakis returns that he discovers his diner is in a shambles.

The film will feature English subtitles.

Soul Kitchen will be screened on 15 July at the Goethe-Institut auditorium, 119 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, at 6.30pm.
