Joburg, get ready for Kenny G

JOBURG - Award-winning jazz saxophonist in town for one night only.

The maestro of smooth, contemporary jazz, Kenny G, is heading to South Africa.

The Grammy Award-winner will perform for one night only at the Coca-Cola Dome, Northriding, in November.

Kenny G will be brought to these shores by Canoc Productions – who also brought Trey Songz, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown to South Africa – and Mzansi Magic Music.

“We are exceptionally excited to bring this phenomenally successful… artist to perform in South Africa,” said Canoc Productions MD and founder, Pleasure Letsoalo.

The jazz musician’s career spans almost three decades with 23 albums, a testament to his grafting of R&B, pop and Latin music on to a jazz foundation.

“Since the early ’80s, his combination of unparalleled instrumental chops and indelible melodies has resulted in sales of more than 75 million records worldwide and more than a dozen climbs to the top of Billboard’s contemporary jazz chart,” said Letsoalo.

The saxophonist landed a record deal with Arista Records in 1982 and launched his career with his critically acclaimed self-titled debut in the same year.

This album was followed by 1983’s G-Force and 1985’s Gravity, which further cemented his reputation.

By the ’90s, Kenny G was a multi-platinum seller and a frequent collaborator with some of the most iconic figures in American popular music, including Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Natalie Cole, and Frank Sinatra.

Other career highlights include the 1994 holiday album Miracles, which took him to the top of the Billboard chart for the first time, and 2004’s At Last… The Duets Album, which featured the talents of Barbra Streisand, Burt Bacharach and LeAnn Rimes, among others.

“We are excited to be a part of the Kenny G concert. As Mzansi Magic Music, we believe in exposing our audiences to the best in local and international music,” said Mzansi Magic Music marketing head, Victor Koaho.

Kenny G will perform on 20 November at the Coca-Cola Dome, Northumberland Avenue, Northriding, at 8pm.
