Russian musicians bring sonatas to Linder

PARKTOWN - Two consummate Russian musicians will delight audiences with performances of beloved sonatas at the Linder Auditorium this month.

Violinist Ilya Gringolts and pianist Peter Laul will perform what will be the Johannesburg Musical Society’s sixth concert this year.

Both musicians hail originally from St Petersburg.

Society spokesperson Herman van Niekerk said Gringolts was the youngest competitor to win the Premio Paganini Competition in 1998, and that Laul is a “superb chamber musician” and the recipient of an honorary medal from the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Culture.

“Both play with some of the world’s greatest orchestras,” he said.

“Gringolts, who plays a Stradivarius violin, has performed with orchestras of the stature of the Halle Orchestra, the Israeli Philharmonic and the Bamberg Symphony, and has recorded extensively for labels such as Deutsche Grammophon and Hyperion.”

Laul has performed under the batons of conductors such as Valery Gergiev and Maxim Shostakovich.

He also regularly performs with artists such as Gary Hoffman, Tedi Papavrami, David Grimal, and Gringolts.

The society concert will see the musicians perform sonatas by Dvorak (F Major, Opus 57), Beethoven (Opus 30, number two in C Minor), and Richard Strauss’ only sonata for piano and violin, Sonata in E Flat Major.

The concert will take place on 21 June at the Linder Auditorium, 27 St Andrews Road, Parktown, at 8pm.
