Soul folk songbird Laura Burhenn heading to SA

LAURA Burhenn, frontwoman for soul folk band The Mynabirds, will tour South Africa solo in July.

The Songbird Tour will see her perform in Joburg, Cape Town, Durban, Grahamstown and other venues.

Speaking on behalf of tour promoters One Fine Day, publicist Liny Kruger said that Burhenn had toured the world extensively as a member of indie mega bands The Postal Service and Bright Eyes.

“As part of the tour initiative, Burhenn will… collaborate with Inge Beckmann for the Cape Town performances, Shotgun Tori and Lucy Kruger for the Grahamstown performances, and Eve Rakow in Johannesburg, as well as focus on women from previously disadvantaged communities… in the areas she visits,” said Kruger.

“This is part of a mentorship programme in association with Lana Crowster, a graduate from the Africa Voices Trust.”

The tour will emphasise celebration of creative women.

“It is aimed at being an exchange that serves as an interaction between established international artists, up and coming South African performers, and local talent within disadvantaged communities,” said Kruger.

For the mentorship programme, the One Fine Day directors, Crowster and Burhenn will select two candidates from disadvantaged communities.

The candidates will be trained for a month prior to the tour, with a focus on learning the songs, performance requirements, and stagecraft.

The tour will also take the singers to Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape, where a charity show for the Amapondo Children’s Project will be performed.

Burhenn will perform on 17 July at POPArt, Main Street Life, 286 Fox Street, Maboneng Precinct at 8pm.
