Italian violin wizard to visit Parkhurst

PARKHURST - An innovative Italian jazz violinist with a knack for fusing genres is set to take South African music lovers by storm.

Luca Ciarla will tour South Africa in June and July, and will pay Parkhurst’s Play Station Theatre a visit.

Ciarla visited these shores with his quartet a few years ago for a long, successful tour.

This time, he will travel solo, with two very different programmes – Fiddler in the Loop and Bach into Myself.

Fiddler in the Loop will see Ciarla take to the stage with his fiddle, an ocarina, and a few toy instruments.

“With a loop pedal, he plays layers of music over each other, creating an astonishing orchestral texture,” said theatre owner Saul Bamberger.

“Step my step, [he] unfolds new virtuoso passages and unique sounds, playing the violin like a guitar, a cello or percussive instrument.”

The musician will also sing, whistle and play the ocarina or other instruments in this imaginative soundscape.

In Bach into Myself, Ciarla will pay tribute to Johann Sebastian Bach, his favourite composer, by re-arranging some of the master’s greatest compositions with a contemporary touch.

Ciarla’s South African tour will begin on 8 June, and will include performances at Grahamstown’s National Arts Festival, Pretoria’s Unisa Music Foundation, Bloemfontein’s Vryfees Festival, Cape Town’s Casa Labia, the George Arts Theatre, and the University of the Witwatersrand’s 969 Festival.

Ciarla will perform on 14 June at the Play Station Theatre, corner of 15th Street and 2nd Avenue, Parkhurst.
