Chekhov brought to life at Joburg Theatre

The works of celebrated playwright, Anton Chekhov will be brought to life once again at the Joburg Theatre.

Celebrated Russian playwright, Anton Chekhov’s work will be brought to life 10 years after it originally made its debut at the Joburg Theatre. The return will see timeless shows, revived by director Andre Stolz, come together in the vibrant Festival at the Fringe.

According to Brenda Sakellarides, media spokesperson at Artslink, the festival was first held in 2004, and is set to once again wow with bigger and better programmes.

“Anton Chekhov inspired many authors of the 20th century and continues to inspire new generations with his complex characters and universal themes…,” Sakellarides said of the acclaimed playwright.

She added that Chekov had widely been acknowledged as one of the most performed playwrights in the world and arguably one of the most influential.

The festival will take place from 4-16 June and will feature stage veterans such as Kevin Smith, Lionel Newton, David Butler and Lynne Maree.

The Chekhov Festival is the brainchild of Stolz, a Johannesburg-based actor, director and producer .

Stolz’s passion for the timeless brilliance of Chekhov’s work is reflected in his careful programming of the two-week festival.

The festival will feature an array of activities including short story adaptations, one act plays and dramatic readings. A mini Chekhov Film Festival will also be included in the two week festival.

Some of these performances include Rothschild’s Fiddle, directed by Chantal Nativel, and Brothers, adapted by the late Reza de Wet.
