Peoples Theatre brings Pinocchio to life

BRAAMFONTEIN - Parents won't have to wish upon a star for their children's entertainment now that the Peoples Theatre has announced its new production.

Disney’s My Son Pinocchio Jr, a stage adaptation of the award-winning musical, will tell this beloved story from the perspective of toy maker Geppetto.

“[The production] follows the adventures of the little wooden puppet who is magically brought to life by the Blue Fairy, who informs him that he can become a real boy if he proves himself to be ‘brave, truthful and unselfish’,” said the theatre’s director Jill Girard.

“Pinocchio’s efforts to become a real boy involve encounters with a host of unsavoury characters. Join the Blue Fairy, Jiminy Cricket, puppet master Stromboli, and a lively cast of other eccentrics as Geppetto journeys beyond the toy shop to discover the meaning of family.”

Girard billed the production as a “dynamic mix of heart-warming fairytale and action-packed adventure”.

“Audiences will follow Pinocchio’s journey from an awkward wooden puppet to a real boy, and will be charmed by Geppetto’s transformation from demanding creator to father,” she said.

“The production is set to a soundtrack of popular songs, including When You Wish Upon a Star, and I’ve Got No Strings, alongside a host of new tunes by Oscar and Grammy award winner Stephen Schwartz.”

Disney’s My Son Pinocchio Jr will run from 19 May until 10 August at the Peoples Theatre, Joburg Theatre complex, corner of Loveday and Hoofd streets, Braamfontein.
