Vuyani’s full moon rises

Company celebrates 15th year in spectacular style.

BRAAMFONTEIN – Vuyani Dance Company celebrated its 15th anniversary with the premier of Full Moon at Joburg Theatre.

The sumptuous production features the talents of 25 dancers, the South African National Youth Orchestra, and two vocalists, with costumes designed by Black Coffee.

According to company founder and choreographer, Gregory Maqoma the production was conceived as an “evocative dance odyssey that transports audiences from a celestial terrain of galaxies in outer space to the oceans, mountains and rivers of earth”.

“It is a transformational journey to the stars and back, to the fairylands of our ancestors – the lands we once knew and continue to desire,” he said.

“The piece slips softly between myth, truth and the unknown.”

Along the way, the journey took in the innocence and purity of the mythic golden age, the struggle between light and dark, titanic forces and the drama of creation, and the dawn of hope as humanity struggles to make sense of its place in the order of things.

The company was joined by guest artists Thoriso Magongwa, an internationally renowned and classically trained ballet dancer and teacher, and Gregory Alcan, a former world, European and French aerobic gymnastics champion.

The original score, performed by the orchestra, was composed by Isaac Molelekoa, under the artistic direction of Luyanda Sidiya.

The production will also mark the beginning of a partnership between the company and the South African National Youth Orchestra Foundation, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.

Full Moon will run until 11 May at Joburg Theatre, corner of Simmonds Street and Stiemens Road, Braamfontein.
