Bieber in retrospection at Wam

BRAAMFONTEIN - Acclaimed photographer Jodi Bieber's first major mid-career retrospective will take place at Wits Art Museum.

Between Darkness and Light will include a selection of Bieber’s work from 1993 to the present.

This exhibition will be shown in South Africa for the first time, after having been shown at two major venues in Germany.

“The exhibition includes close to 100 photographs from some of Bieber’s most significant bodies of work,” said museum spokesperson Jessica Foli.

“These include Las Canas, Real Beauty, Soweto, Between Dogs & Wolves, Going Home — Illegality and Repatriation — South Africa/Mozambique, and David. “Women Who Murdered Their Husbands and a multimedia installation from her Survivors of Domestic Violence series will also form part of the images on display.”

Foli added that this was the first time many of these works will be exhibited in Bieber’s home town.

“The exhibition provides the public with the unique opportunity to see the diverse range of Bieber’s work, from her celebrated work to her rarely shown independent series,” said Foli.

“[Her] work defies categories such as photojournalism and visual art, making this exhibition a must-see.”

The exhibition was made possible with funding and support from Stadthaus Ulm and Museum Goch.

A number of weekend ‘talkabouts’ have been scheduled for this exhibition.

Between Darkness and Light will run from 17 April until 20 July at Wam, corner of Bertha and Jorissen streets, Braamfontein.
