What’s on this weekend

JOBURG - There's a lot to see and do in and around Joburg this weekend.

Here is our pick of some of the highlights.

Saturday, 29 March:

The SAonTap Craft Beer Festival will take place at Old Parktonian Sports Club, Bordeaux South, from 9am.

The festival will feature 25 microbreweries with over 110 of their hand-crafted brews, top South African bands, and a variety of gourmet foods.

Food for Life Midrand will host a fun walk at the Carlswald Lifestyle shopping centre at 10.30am.

The walk aims to raise awareness for the non-profit organisation which feeds children in Ivory Park on a monthly basis.

1DWorld, the ultimate One Direction fan experience will open at Montecasino, Fourways, at 10am.

Fans can enjoy One Direction activities, merchandise giveaways, karaoke, and a wall where fans can write messages to the band members.

There will also be a live Twitter screen with tweets from band members.

Stomp your feet to some of the hottest local music at the Nokia Rise and Shine Festival at Sandton Central Park, from 8am.

The festival, which features the likes of Jeremy Loops, Yoav, Shadowclub, Desmond & The Tutus, Tidal Waves, Bongeziwe Mabandla, Andra, Michael Lowman and Dave Baudains, promises to be a cracker.

Kick off the festival with a light yoga session on the lawn at 9am before enjoying a day of food, nature, music and friends.

Penny Place Stables will host a show jumping show on Saturday and Sunday at 30 Summit Road, Blue Hills, and people are invited to support the show jumpers, who will compete in all grades.

The 1.2m classes will be held on Sunday.

Sunday, 30 March:

Exclusive Books invites parents to bring their bookworms to their shops for reading and activity sessions.

Ruda Landman, Simphiwe Dana, Zapiro, Gcina Mhlophe, Tony Leon, 5FM’s Catherine Grenfell, Talk Radio 702’s Jenny Crwys-Williams, Jaco Jacobs, Fanie Viljoen, Katlego Maboe, Eloise Pretorius and other celebrities will be at various stores.

There is no entrance fee, but readers are asked to bring stationery to be donated to a local charity.

The SA Guide Dogs Society for the Blind will host a fun day at its premises on Wroxham Road, Paulshof, from 11am until 3pm.

Visitors can enjoy delicious food, crafts, a book sale, a puppy dress-up competition, and demonstrations by guide dogs and service dogs.

If taking in a show at the theatre is more your scene, Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr is on at The People’s Theatre at Joburg Theatre, Loveday Street, Braamfontein, with shows at 10.30am and 2.30pm this weekend.

Sean Bovim’s Queen at the Ballet, on at The Mandela at Joburg Theatre, tells the story of British rock giant Freddie Mercury through the medium of dance.

Queen at the Ballet will play on Saturday at 8pm and on Sunday at 3pm.
